That’s what the sign read out front of Advance Auto Parts. Does anyone else find that mildly disturbing? I’m just gonna be honest here, because if I’m in the mood for some nuts I don’t think the local car parts store is my first destination. I’m curious if this is a high demand item for these guys. I think if it was they might consider changing the name to Advance Auto Parts and Nuts.

As I saw this sign I couldn’t help but think that this is a company that has lost it’s focus. You’re an auto parts store. You would think the sign would read, “crankshafts on sale” or “Synthetic oil buy one get one free” or “Get your monkey wrench today!.”

I am reminded of how many times our churches get off focus and start promoting or focusing on something that is off-mission/purpose. Today we’re boycotting the local supermarket and tomorrow its the next Harry Potter movie. This year Disney is off limit and next year it will be something else.

For us, our focus is to “Love God, Love Others, and Serve The World” That’s it. Plain and simple. We want people to experience the life-giving power of Jesus. We decided early on that if Jesus came to give life than we want to do the same. We know that we don’t have all the answers and we can’t fix everyone’s problems but we do know who can and His name is Jesus. We want to be a sign pointing people to Him. If something does not accomplish that mission than we simply won’t do it. In a world of limitless opportunities our role as leaders is to make sure that we stay focused on what we are called to do because everything else is just nuts.

I read this great New York Times article about a church in London that’s designed for atheists.  No, it wasn’t designed to reach them.  It’s a church without God. Now, you might ask why an atheist would want...
